(CBS) LANHAM, Md. - Virginia State Senator Creigh Deeds is in critical condition after being stabbed "multiple times around the head and neck," and his son is reportedly dead following an incident at his home in Milboro, Va. early Tuesday, according to Virginia State Police spokesperson Corinne Geller.
Deeds, a Democrat, was flown to the University of Virginia Medical Center. Geller said that police responded to the residence at about 7:25 a.m. after receiving a call.
Geller said that the senator's son, Gus, was alive at the time police arrived but died of a gunshot wound on the scene.
Geller said the motive and sequence of events are unclear, but that they are not looking for any suspects at this point. She also said that they believe the incident took place Tuesday morning.
Deeds ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2009.
