Authorities arrested a New York man Friday for attempting to join a terrorist group affiliated with al Qaeda, federal prosecutors announced.
Marcos Alonso Zea, also known as "Ali Zea," was arrested Friday morning at his home in Brentwood, N.Y.
Prosecutors allege that Zea attempted to fly to Yemen in 2012 and 2013 to join the group al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, which claimed responsibility for attempting to blow up a commercial airliner over Detroit on Christmas Day 2009.
British authorities sent Zea back to the United States after he tried flying to Yemen through London in 2012. In January he was arrested after trying to fly directly to Yemen from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
Zea, 25, was scheduled to be arraigned in a Long Island federal courtroom later in the day.
