AUSTIN Flooding has prompted evacuations and high-water rescues in Central Texas.
The National Weather Service has issued flash flooding warnings for 22 counties effective through noon CT Thursday
The flash flood watch is in effect for Bandera, Bastrop, Bexar, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Comal, Dewitt, Fayette, Gillespie, Gonzales, Guadalupe, Hays, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Lavaca, Lee, Llano, Travis, Williamson and Wilson Counties.
The weather service says an additional one to three inches of rain, and as much as five inches, are expected today.
Some homes in San Marcos are being evacuated, as well as along a creek in Wimberley, where an emergency shelter has been set up.
Emergency officials say they've had to rescue people clinging to trees or wading through high water.
Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services spokesman Warren Hassinger told the Associated Press that a helicopter hoisted four people to safety who were trapped in a rural area near Buda.
EMS boats were used for rescues in the Austin area.
Evacuations were ordered along flooded creeks in nearby San Marcos and Wimberley. Schools in Wimberley, San Marcos and Lockhart closed Thursday.
Classes in at least three school districts are opening later than usual this morning.
Officials say they don't have word of any injuries.
Austin Energy says about 6,400 customers lost electricity from storms since Wednesday night.
CBS affiliate KEYE reports that five floodgates on the Tom Miller Dam, located between Lake Austin and Lady Bird Lake, have been closed, after they were opened last night due to high water upstream. The Lower Colorado River Authority predicts flooding downstream later this week.
