BOISE, Idaho The stricken captain of a United Airlines flight that made an emergency landing died at a hospital, officials said.
The man was still alive when he arrived at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center but died overnight while undergoing treatment, spokeswoman Jennifer Krajnik said Friday.
Boise airport spokeswoman Patti Miller told CBS News the apparent heart attack prompted the emergency landing just before 8 p.m. on Thursday.
The airline did not give the captain's name, citing privacy reasons.
"I am sad to confirm that our co-worker passed away last night. Our thoughts are with his family at this time," spokeswoman Christen David said in an email.
Another off-duty United pilot was onboard and assisted, David said.
United flight 1603 from Houston to Seattle diverted to Boise for the medical emergency. The flight landed safely and was met by paramedics who took the pilot to the hospital. The Boeing 737-900 had 161 passengers and a crew of six on board.
Passengers were put on another plane that landed at Sea-Tac Airport early Friday, just after midnight.
Passengers told CBS Seattle affiliate KIRO-TV the crew asked for a doctor and at least two people responded. Passengers then saw CPR being administered.
Passenger Jeff Moehlenbruck credited a radiologist for stepping in. He said the crew announced a "minor emergency."
