BOSTON A deputy sheriff and a prisoner were shot at a Boston hospital Wednesday, the police said.

Boston police said the prisoner is in custody.

Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said two deputy sheriffs brought a prisoner in for treatment at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, CBS Boston station WBZ-TV reports.

As the deputy sheriffs removed the man's handcuffs, he lunged at one of them, who fell to the ground and was shot in the leg, Davis said.

The second deputy sheriff shot the prisoner.

It is unclear if the gun was in the prisoner's hands or whether it went off during a struggle.

Police say the deputy sheriff was in serious condition but expected to be OK.

The suspect was said to be in critical condition at Massachusetts General Hospital with a more serious gunshot wound.

The police said on its Twitter feed that they are not looking for additional suspects.

Police have shut down the area around the two hospitals.

Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary released the following statement on Twitter:

The hospital is open but the Emergency Department is currently closed while police investigate the shooting.
